The spoil heaps, mountains made up with residues of coal are, with the rests and the mining cottages, the last visible witnesses of this time during which a vast community of Polish immigrants, famous for their heat with work, arrived in France.
The Polish House : “Maison de la Polojnia” in Hénin-Beaumont maintains this history.
Nowadays, the town of Lens is especially known for its famous football team: the “Blood and Gold”. This name has been chosen because of the colours of their shirt but also because of their play which is very famous in the county. The football of the Racing Club of Lens is almost a religion.
Another source of pride: The Louvre-Lens, museum which will be inaugurated in 2009 and which will offer on 5000m ² one of the largest collections of works of art of the famous Parisian museum, developed by the architectural audacity of Japanese agency SANAA.
